Special Project – The Ally Ring

The Ally Ring is intended to be a very effective way to address important social justice issues, including white privilege and systemic racism. Think Lance Armstrong Live Strong Bracelet meets social justice…

The Premise:

The real work to address the issues of white privilege and systemic racism in our society needs to be done by white people. And, given the current social justice climate, more white people than ever before are committed to being a part of the solution to these problems. And, many of these people do not know what to do to be part of the solution and/or they are not ready to take on a major role. It is time for the Ally Ring…

What is the Ally Ring?

The Ally Ring is a beautifully designed silicone ring that is worn on a person’s pinky finger as a declaration of their commitment to being an effective ally to marginalized people, in particular to Black and Indigenous People of Color, (BIPOC). The development and sale of Ally Rings creates four specific ways to engage people in constructive and ongoing conversations and to get them into ACTION to address the issues of white privilege, systemic racism and more:

EXTERNAL AWARENESS – The distinctive Ally Ring is worn on the pinky finger for maximum visibility to others in order to encourage conversations that otherwise would not happen. The Ally Ring invites the question, “What’s that ring?”

INTERNAL AWARENESS – The distinctive Ally Ring is worn on the pinky finger to consistently and persistently remind the wearer of their commitment to being an effective ally to BIPOC. Seeing and feeling the Ally Ring day in and day out urges the wearer to consistently take action to live fully into their commitment.

EDUCATION AND SUPPORT – Purchasing the Ally Ring immediately enrolls the wearer in an active and engaged community that provides educational and emotional support to those who desire to be more effective allies. The ongoing information and support from the Ally Ring Community educates the Ally Ring wearer about what it actually means to be an effective ally and empowers them to know what to DO to be an effective ally. The community support is ongoing and is delivered in a variety of ways from a variety of different sources.

FUND RAISING – Sales of the Ally Ring generate significant financial support for organizations doing powerful work to effectively address important social justice issues, including white privilege and systemic racism.

The Ally Ring is designed to be a way to ensure that the current compelling and widespread conversation about the importance of addressing issues like white privilege and systemic racism does not fade away over time. Now is time to resolve these issues once and for all.

Ally Ring Project Notes:

The work of the creation, sale and distribution of the Ally Ring and the work of the delivery of the ongoing support to the Ally Ring Community is intended to be done by a truly diverse group of people and on a very large scale.

Providing the direction of the work of creating, selling and distributing the Ally Ring and delivering the ongoing support to the Ally Ring Community is intended to be done by an Advisory Board made up almost entirely of highly knowledgeable, skilled and influential Black and Indigenous People of Color, (BIPOC). This Advisory Board will direct elements of the project such as the design of the ring itself, the design of all branding and marketing materials, the vendors/partners we work with, the resources that are made available to the Ally Ring Community, and the specific organizations the funds raised are distributed to.
